Gotham

Dear Mies,

I was thinking about Gotham. The dark complicated city, filled with villains, crime, injustice, pain.  The post-apocalyptic city, the one were institutions had been corrupted and evil nourishes. The city of Batman.

Speaking from an architectural point of view, the city changed over the years according to the various writers and illustrators who participated in it. But to me, Frank Miller´s Gotham is perhaps the most interesting one. There is something about those streets and buildings that resonate within me. Director Christopher Nolan was inspired by Miller´s creation in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

In the films, Gotham is portrayed like a huge metropolis, the mix between New York, Chicago and Tokyo. The skyline displays sophisticated international style towers alongside never-ending skyscrapers with a distinctive New York essence.

The transport system is a masterpiece in itself:  a network of elevated lanes and platforms that connect the city, which leads me to the next question: Why we associate future cities with elevated transport system? Think about it: flying Deloreans, Futurama, even Archigram with the walking cities.

Whether it is flying cars or high-speed trains at 100 feet high, from the Jetsons to Star Wars, there is something about height that makes us think about the future, which leads me to the second question: Why - oh - why do we think the future will be apocalyptic? In movies or books, when it comes to the future, I cannot help but notice that it is tinted with a sort of almost certain pessimism. Well, let´s hope they are mistaken.

But going back to Gotham: What makes the city so interesting? Perhaps the fact that although the twisted stories, there is a sense of realness. The problems and adversities are somehow relatable, the fight between good and evil. I think every city has a bit of Gotham in it.  Maybe the thing that makes this city so captivating is the fact that no matter how bad things are, how dark the sky might appear, there is also somehow, somewhere, light. And if you are really lucky, a bat sign in it.

CIUDAD GÓTICA

Querido Mies:

Gotham es un intrincado y ficticio aparato urbanístico cuna de los más disfuncionales villanos  y hogar de Batman. Es una especie de ciudad pos apocalíptica, plagada de delincuentes, donde las instituciones fueron corrompidas y el mal aflora.

En términos arquitectónicos la ciudad fue cambiando con los años según los variados escritores e ilustradores que intervinieron en ella. Pero de todas las versiones de Gotham, la más interesante en mi opinión, es quizás la de Frank Miller porque es ahí donde la ciudad obtiene mayor peso.

Christopher Nolan fue quien se basó en esta versión  para la trilogía cinematográfica de "The dark Knight". Allí, Gotham es retratada como una gran metrópolis, una mezcla entre Nueva York, Chicago y Tokio. El skyline presenta enormes y elegantes torres de estilo internacional junto con variados rascacielos de impronta Neoyorquina.

El sistema de transporte es una joya en sí mismo: una red de vías elevadas que conectan la ciudad lo cual me hace preguntarme ¿Por qué cuando se piensa en las  ciudades del futuro se piensa en medios de transportes elevado?

Ya sea autos volando o mono-rieles a 50 metros de altura, desde los Supersónicos hasta Star Wars hay algo con la altura que nos hace pensar en el futuro y lo que me lleva a otra pregunta ¿Por qué la mayoría de los futuros son apocalípticos?

En las películas o libros, cuando se aborda las problemáticas del futuro no puedo evitar darme cuenta que está teñido con una suerte de pesimismo casi certero. Ojalá no sea así.

Pero volviendo a Gotham, ¿Qué es lo que la hace tan interesante? A lo mejor es que detrás de las ficcionales e intrincadas historias, existe algo de verdad. Los problemas y adversidades presentes, son de alguna manera reconocibles en nuestras ciudades, la batalla entre el bien y el mal. Creo que todas las ciudades tienen algo de Gotham. Quizás lo que cautiva tanto de este lugar es el hecho de que sin importar lo mal que salgan las cosas, lo oscura que parezca la noche, siempre existe de alguna manera, en algún lugar, un haz de luz en el cielo. Y si tenes mucha suerte, una señal sobre el mismo.
