Dieter Rams: Sobre el uso del Color en Arquitectura.

Querido Mies,

Hoy quisiera hablarle sobre el uso del color.

Maestro, ha dicho en una entrevista que, si tuviera que pintar una pared, llamaría a un artista, pero de no estar Picasso disponible, la dejaría blanca. Fue mucha la alegría que me dieron sus palabras, me empujaron a confesarle hoy,mi debilidad por el blanco. Es difícil explicarlo. ¿Será por todo lo que representa? La paz, la armonía, la puro y lo divino; o quizás como la música,hay ciertas melodías que nos resuenan y nos conmueven mas que otras. La arquitectura blanca tiene ese efecto en mi.

Cuando no contamos con materiales en estado puro, cuando están ausentes los preciosos mármoles, piedras o las maderas naturales, cuando la materia prima es un revoque fino que requiere de un color, entonces elijo el blanco.

En aquella primavera del ´28 cuando diseñaba la Casa para la familia Tugendhat, usted que todo lo razonaba, de todos los colores disponibles, eligió el blanco. Años más tarde, cuando le encargaron la casa Farnsworth, volvió a escogerlo. Hoy nos resulta imposible imaginarlas de otra manera.  

El tema del color en la arquitectura ha estado siempre presente. Como usted que leyó para comprender que era arquitectura, nosotros leemos y anotamos, para entender el porqué de lo que nos gusta. Todo lo que nos atrae y no podemos poner en palabras. En ese espíritu, y para desarrollar el tema, comenzaremos con  su compatriota y colega Dieter Rams que  reflexiono y hablo en varias ocasiones del uso del color. En una entrevista, para la exposición “Less and more” nos regalo estas palabras:

“En cuanto al uso del color era muy cuidadoso.. A veces es más importante tener un botón amarillo el cual te dice algo, que tener todo el producto amarillo.. Pero tengo ciertos productos en los cuales he estado dispuesto a aceptar mas colores. Me gustan en ciertas ocasiones, pero debe ajustarse al producto. Un electrodoméstico de cocina que usted usa todos los días en su cocina, no puede ser de color. Sus botones sí. Pero no todo el aparato, es demasiado dominante en la cocina, y el diseño no debe dominar a la gente, el diseño debe ayudar.”

Dieter usa el blanco para no ser invasivo.  Le gusta comparar sus productos con un mayordomo inglés. Un buen mayordomo dice, esta siempre que se lo necesita, y cuando no, desaparece. Pasa a ser invisible. El color, está presente en menores proporciones  o en productos de menor tamaño. En la misma entrevista dijo:

 “Tener pequeños toques de color, hace al producto más colorido que tener toda la cosa en color. Tener un encendedor en color, puede ser como tener una flor sobre la mesa”

La estantería universal 606 todavía se fabrica. Blanca, casi invisible. Flexible y adaptable a cualquier hogar, lista para que el usuario  la llenara de sus libros, discos, juguetes y adornos. En ves de decirles como vivir, Dieter les entrego un lienzo en blanco en donde pudieran pintar su vida, y así quisiera que fuera la arquitectura.

Dieter viejo druida, dominaste el color de manera impecable, como un buen arquitecto domina la luz. Dijiste y cumpliste:

“el buen diseño no debe ser invasivo”

In this special occasion, I´ll like to talk about the use of color.

Maestro, you´ve said in an interview that if you had to paint a wall, you´ll call an artist, but if Picasso wasn’t available, you´ll leave it white. Those words bring me great joy. 

Therefore I must confess you, about my weakness for white buildings. Trying to explain why is not easy task. Maybe is because it represents peace, armory, pureness, the divine; or maybe like music, that certain melodies resonate and move us more than others. White architecture has that effect on me.

When there are not raw materials, when we don’t have precious marbles, stones or a nice piece of wood. When we only have a wall that requires painting,  I choose white.

Back then, in the spring of '28 when you were designing the house for the Tugendhat family, you did everything for a reason, from all the colors available, you choose white. Years later when you were commissioned with the Farnsworth house, you choose it again. Today we can’t imagine it any other way.

The subject of color in architecture has been always present. Like you, who read, so that you could understand what the architecture is, we read and write, so we can express, the things that matter us more. In that spirit, to talk about the subject is your fellow compatriot and colleague Dieter Rams, who spoke on many occasions about the use of color. In an interview, for the exposition less is more, he said:

"In the case of color´s I was very careful, sometimes is more important to have a yellow push button which tells you something. So the yellow color makes the whole thing more colorful than make the whole thing in color.  But I have some products, where I was willing to accept more colors. I like in some cases, but it has to fit the product. A kitchen machine that you use every day in your kitchen cannot stay in a color, in a stark color; the push buttons yes, but not the whole thing, is too dominating in the kitchen, and design should not dominate people, should help people."

Dieter uses white so that his products are not intrusive. He likes comparing his products to an English butler. A good butler he says, is always at your disposal when need it, and when not, he disappears, he becomes invisible. He uses color in smaller proportion or smaller objects. In the same interview he said:

"Having small touches of color makes it more colorful that having the whole in color. Having a cigarette lighting in color means it can be like a flower in a table."

The 606 universal shelving system, it's still produced by Vitsoe. White, almost invisible. It works for any home, ready for the user to fill it with his books, records, toys or whatever they please. Dieter didn’t  tell his clients how to live, he gave them a white canvas in which they can paint their colorful life. That’s the way architecture should be for me.

Dieter old wizard, you domain the color like no one else. You said and you honored:

"good design is unobtrusive"
