Sobre el tiempo en Arquitectura 02 1

Querido Mies:

Cuando camino por la calle y paso por alguna obra en construcción, bajo la velocidad y observo detenidamente.  Trato de entender y completar en mi mente la imagen del edificio terminado. Pocas veces encuentro belleza o inspiración. Lo mismo me pasa cuando me compro algunas revistas de arquitectura y paso por sus hojas. Son pocos los proyectos que se destacan.

Como bien alertó Barragán en su discurso de aceptación del Premio Pritzker: 

 "En proporción alarmante han desaparecido en las publicaciones dedicadas a la arquitectura las palabras belleza, inspiración, embrujo, magia, sortilegio, encantamiento y también las de serenidad, silencio, intimidad y asombro."

La arquitectura necesita tiempo pero creo que el tiempo es una de las cosas más lujosas hoy en día y  son pocos los capaces de darse ese lujo. La velocidad e instantaneidad que poseemos en nuestra era para informarnos, comunicarnos, educarnos tiene su precio y requiere que debamos seguir su acelerado paso. Siento que hoy en día, los arquitectos no tienen el tiempo necesario para desarrollar sus obras. Cuando veo viejos edificios academistas encuentro belleza en sus proporciones, detalles, relaciones con el entorno y  hasta en la elección de sus materiales. No digo que los edificios antiguos son bellos y los contemporáneos no, pero puedo observar una lógica de pensamiento detrás de esas obras que hoy en día no se percibe tan a menudo.

Una lógica pensamiento que reconoce la importancia de una esquina a nivel urbano y que nunca concebiría la ubicación de un local sanitario allí, una lógica de pensamiento que entiende al edificio como una unidad y no como una sumatoria de partes, que utiliza materiales económicos, no porque sean baratos sino porque soportan el paso del tiempo, una lógica de pensamiento que no requiere de complicadas y rebuscadas operaciones para ser bella, porque su belleza está en su simpleza, en su armonía, en su serenidad.

  

En una época donde se premia el multitasking, los followers y likes, la cantidad antes que la calidad, los edificios son levantados y resueltos en lo que parece un abrir y cerrar de ojos, siento que se deberían reconsiderar la manera y el tiempo que la arquitectura requiere, y recuperar las olvidadas  virtudes: paciencia, belleza y silencio.

About the use of time in Architecture 02 1

Dear Mies,

When I´m walking down the street and I stumble across a construction site, I slow down and watch carefully. I try to complete in my mind, the picture of how the building is gonna look like when is finish. I hardly ever find beauty or inspiration. I also find this can apply to some architecture magazines. When I look through the pages, only a few projects stand out.

Like Barragán once warned: 

“It is alarming that publications devoted to architecture have banished from their pages the words Beauty, Inspiration, Magic, Spellbound, Enchantment, as well as the concepts of Serenity, Silence, Intimacy and Amazement.”

Architecture needs time, but I believe time is really a luxury nowadays and not everyone can afford it. The speed and instantaneity that allow us to communicate, inform, and educate have a price that requires that we keep up the pace.

I believe that more often than not, architects don´t have enough time to develop their work. When I see old beaux-arts buildings I find beauty in its proportion, details, emplacement and even materials. This does not mean that old buildings are beautiful and contemporary are not, but I can detect a way of thinking behind those creations that nowadays is hard to find.

A way of thinking that recognizes the importance of a street corner in the urban landscape, and will never design a building that places the bathroom there.

A way of thinking that understands the building as a whole, and not the sum of parts.

A way of thinking that uses inexpensive materials, not because they are cheap but because they stand the test of time.

A way of thinking that does not require complicated nor intricate forms to be beautiful because its beauty lies in simplicity, harmony, and serenity.

In the age where multitasking, followers, and likes are rewarded, quantity is preferred over quality and buildings are shaped in a blink of an eye, I feel like we should reconsider the methods and time that architecture requires as well as the forgotten virtues: patience, beauty, and silence.
