Clorindo Testa: El chico de Esther
Querido Mies,
Yo dije:
“¿Qué carta?Ah, yo no la vi.”
Entonces, yo pude participar, ¿Entendés?, absolutamente libre.

CLORINDO TESTA: ESTHER´S KID
Dear Mies,
The first years as an architect student were tough. I could spend hours searching for inspiration, references. I would go over blueprints, construction details, books, and yet couldn´t really understand the projects.
One afternoon, I came across an interview of architect Clorindo Testa. It was a a breath of fresh air. The joyful way in which he explained his projects, the clarity of his ideas, the freedom of his designs. Wisdom transmitted in plain, understandable language, without pretensions.
I knew that this was how I wanted to approach the profession. Not because of his unique style or his technical expertise, but because of his human values. Testa was remarkable intelligent, but was also gifted witg remarkable kindness.
We share a brief anecdote, where Clorindo shows his humility. As Emerson said: "A great man is always willing to be little."
In Clorindo´s words:
"The contest for the province of La Pampa, started in the year 55'. Then, they postponed it because the revolution of 55´ came. So, they postponed it to 56´. It was the Civic Center and the Government House of La Pampa.

"The contest for the province of La Pampa, started in the year 55'. Then, they postponed it because the revolution of 55´ came. So, they postponed it to 56´. It was the Civic Center and the Government House of La Pampa.
Luckily, I had not seen a letter that many architects had written, where they said that before doing the contest for the Civic Center, you had to do the Regulatory Plan, let's say, the Urban Plan, to actually see where you had to construct the Civic Center, and not handpicked it.
Luckily, I didn't see it, and I participated in the contest, because when I told Pancho Rossi and Davinovich to do it. They told me:
"No, we cannot do it, because we have signed the letter."
I said:
So, I was able to participate, absolutely free. And Pancho, and Davidovich, and all of them, and Gaido, couldn't. Although later, when I won, I told them to do it, and we did it together.
But, that contest is also important, because it was one of the first contests that one won.
So, you can think that this contest, gives you, let's say, is moral support. It prompts you, it shows you that you are a good architect... But all that ended, it ended abruptly, when they told the inspector (who at the time was called Garmendia, who was from La Pampas):
"What letter? I didn't see it."
But, that contest is also important, because it was one of the first contests that one won.

"The architect who has won the competition is an architect named Clorindo Testa".
And so, the inspector said:
"But that's Esther's kid."
To sum up, all the importance of the contest, finished because it was Esther's kid who won, not architect Clorindo Testa, but Esther´s child. Esther was my mom, who was from La Pampa. They knew each other since they were young. For that reason, when he heard my name he said:
"But that's Esther's kid."
So, the contest, the Pampa Civic Center, was actually won by Esther's kid, who was me!"
